Up The Rocks

As Jan missed the first part of the trip in the previous article I will add it. We had planned first to explore the part of Zangezur Mt range slopes for ski-touring. I had never been there before either… Zangezur, a tectonic Mt. range, is a nice area for ski-touring and ski-mountaineering and with its craggy sharp granite peaks it looks like small Alps.

Safety was the target of our concern, as the Mt. range borders Azerbaijan, and they say the area was mined during the war. Besides, Azeri soldiers shoot from the other side of the border… so I had thoroughly consulted with some people who had been there before and at the start point of our hike we informed the Armenian borderers we were in area and were further instructed about safety details. We were amazed at the beauty of the area. Afterwards we set off to Mt. Aragats, on our way visiting resort city Jermuk and Lake Sevan. We hope that we will manage to carry out the skiing program this winter in Zangezour Mountains.
